Laying the Groundwork

We have provided some guidelines to help you lay the groundwork for your new business. Please keep in mind these are only steps to get you started and are not the full list of legal forms and requirements for opening a business in Madison.

Preliminary Steps: Opening a Business

1. Confirm with the Planning and Zoning office at Madison Town Hall to make sure that the business you want to conduct is permitted in the zone that you are interested in.  There are strict regulations for medical offices, food prep, and other types of businesses.

2. Check with listing realtors for specific properties and up to date listings. You may search our Member Directory for available realtors in our community.

3. Visit the the Town Clerk’s office to fill out and file a Trade Name Certificate. This is for a business such as a sole proprietorship or LLC only doing business in Madison, not the branch of a store or corporate business registered elsewhere.

4. Your Trade Name Certificate will be shared internally with the town assessor’s office, and you will receive a personal property declaration for your business through the mail in August each year.  You will be assessed taxes on personal property.

5. Check with the Building Official in the Planning and Zoning office if you need to remodel your space. (move walls, change plumbing or electrical components or mechanical renovations). You may need a permit.

6. While at Planning and Zoning, ask for sign regulations.

7. Consult with an attorney throughout the process. You may search our Member Directory for available attorneys in our community.

These are not all of the required forms, permits or regulations for opening a business in Madison but instead are intended to be a guideline to get you started. Please visit the Town Hall for full details and legal requirements.
