Those who live or work in Madison, CT are well aware of what makes it special. This winter, the town has more town pride than ever. As the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea are about to kick off, Madison is beaming with pride as three Olympic athletes are from town. In Freestyle Skiing, Mac Bohonnon* and Kiley McKinnon* have been selected for Team USA. In Figure Skating (Ice Dancing), Zachary Donohue* is competing, along with his partner, Madison Hubbell (we can’t help but love her first name!).
Bohonnon was born March 27, 1995, and is 5’8” tall. He participated in the 2014 Sochi Olympics finishing 5th. He was the 2015 World Cup aerials champion, and he had 3 World Cup wins as of the 2016/2017 season.
McKinnon was born September 1, 1995, is also 5’8”, and is one of the top medal contenders for Team USA for the 2018 Winter Games, which would be her first Olympic appearance. She was the 2015 FIS World Cup aerials champion, 2015 World Championship silver medalist, and 4th place in the 2017 World Championships.
Donohue was born January 8, 1991, and is 6’2”. He and his partner, Madison, won bronze at the U.S. Championships in 2011, and won bronze medals at nationals in 2015, 2016, and 2017. They just missed being in the ice dancing team for the Sochi Olympics so we have our skate laces crossed for them!
(We’ll stick to crossing our fingers for Mac and Kiley since crossed skis lead to a less-than-pretty sight!)
So why are we telling you all this? We can’t stand the thought of just cheering them on through our TVs, so you’ll see Olympic flags and American flags all over downtown. We’re also going to have life-sized cutouts of Mac, Kiley, and Zachary to take selfies with – take your selfie and send them well-wishes for the games! The games begin on February 8 with Opening ceremonies on Friday, February 9 at 8pm in PyeongChang. (They are 14 hours ahead of us, so refer to nbcolympics.com for the current times/schedule.) On Saturday, February 10 at 12:30pm, we’ll gather in front of the post office for a group photo to show our support. Please join us!
Souperbowl! No, not the one with the footballs. The one with the ladles! The event is held on Main Street in downtown Madison on Saturday, January 27 from Noon – 2:30pm. Dress warm and get ready to try a bunch of delicious soups and chili!
